Shark Season

By Lanzarote Fishing | October 15, 2008

Last week on the Margarita Segundo was quite good for shark fishing, waters are warm after being heated all summer long, so there are plenty of sharks about. Our first day out was tuesday, and after three hours of trolling we had only caught a small dolphinfish. However, we spotted a shark fin, so we quickly reeled in and prepared the dolphinfish as bait, but the shark was nowhere to be seen. We trolled around the area four of five times until the shark finally appeared and bit the bait. It was a 45 minute fight between an 80 kilo hammerhead shark and a brit, and the brritish tourist finally won. A very entertaining fight.

Wednesday we saw another shark but it wasn’t very hungry as he didn’t seem very interested on eating our bait. However, we went to the same place the day after, and there it was again, a 100 kilo+ hammerhead shark. We prepared a few skipjack tuna we had previously caught and we slowly trolled around until it bit. It took more than an hour to catch, and just like we did on tuesday, we carefully tied its head with a rope so we could take the hook off and release it.
